A message from the Chef

My goal is to offer dishes that “bring out the flavors of each season and create moments of warmth and connection.”

I was born and raised in Nagano Prefecture, which is also where I began my culinary journey at a local Japanese kaiseki restaurant. I later moved to Kyoto, where I refined my skills at a renowned restaurant in Gion, and spent over a decade honing my craft as part of the opening team at a Michelin-starred establishment.

In June 2018, I opened Oshikoji Okada here in Kyoto, where I continue to create Japanese cuisine that blends tradition with modern innovation. Each encounter with a guest is something I deeply value, and I hope to deliver dishes that leave a lasting impression.

About

Conveniently located near Gion and the downtown Karasuma Oike areas, and quietly nestled on a side street in Kyoto, Oshikoji Okada is an intimate kaiseki restaurant that blends traditional Kyoto cooking with a modern approach. Owner-Chef Okada uses his years of experience to create seasonal menus that showcase the beauty of Japanese cuisine with a fresh, creative touch.

Inside, the warm wooden interior and minimalist design offer a calming space. The 7-seat counter invites guests to enjoy the rhythm and precision of the chef’s preparation, while a private room for up to six people is ideal for special gatherings, family celebrations, or business dinners. Every detail, from the seasonal presentation of dishes to the choice of ceramics and the thoughtful hospitality, is designed to offer an unforgettable dining experience.

Locally-Sourced Ingredients

At Oshikoji Okada, each day begins with collecting fresh groundwater from the nearby area, which is used to prepare our dashi (broth). Seasonal ingredients are carefully selected and prepared using techniques that bring out their natural umami and flavor.

From the choice of tableware to the arrangement of each dish, every element is designed to reflect the beauty of the changing seasons and engage all five senses.
