A message from the Chef
I founded Tempura Tenki in 1933 in Nishijin, Kyoto’s historic weaving district. I was the first in Japan to create “tempura kaiseki,” and Tempura Tenki became known as its birthplace.
Our fusion of tempura and Kyoto cuisine gained nationwide acclaim. For generations, we’ve preserved this tradition here in Nishijin, serving our signature tempura kaiseki to guests from around the world. We honor the unchanging flavors passed down since our founding and our spirit of sincere hospitality, offering an experience where seasonal Kyoto cuisine can be enjoyed alongside exquisite tempura.
About
Nestled in the charming streets of Nishijin, Kyoto, Tenki is housed in a traditional Kyoto machiya townhouse. Beyond the entrance, 10 private tatami rooms of various sizes surround a beautiful Japanese garden, offering seasonal views through shoji sliding screens.
What Tenki focuses on is delivering “the natural deliciousness of each ingredient.” Kyoto vegetables and other produce are sourced daily from local partners, and rice is carefully selected from low-pesticide crops. Seafood is hand-picked daily at Kyoto’s central market, with seasonal catches delivered directly from Akashi and San’in ports. The restaurant uses a special soybean oil that enhances the natural umami of ingredients, creating tempura with a crispy coating that remains light and delicate.
